A person at 2 Brigham Hill Road called police early Monday afternoon and said there might be a body in the woods behind the home, Police Chief Normand A. Crepeau Jr. said. The body was found and state police were called to handle the investigation, the chief said, adding that he did not know if the deceased was male or female. It appeared the body had been in the woods "for more than a day," he said.

With the burned-out shell of the Sweetpea Friends of Rutland Animals shelter looming at the back of their property, the mostly-new Sweetpea board of directors talked last week about their plans to rebuild and why it's taking so long to do so. Last June, the board had hoped to break ground to replace the shelter, which burned down Nov. 22, 2015, in a devastating late-night fire that killed all but a handful of the 50 animals inside.
